AmeriCorps
Who We Are
AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engage more than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters. Created in 1993, AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. Together these programs engage more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year.

AmeriCorps Members Build in Biloxi
By Vanessa Kelly, HHSF AmeriCorps Construction Crew Leader
On May 19th 2007, more than 500 AmeriCorps made their way to the Gulf Coast for the annual AmeriCorps build-a-thon. We worked with the Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast affiliate in Biloxi which had thus far constructed 120 homes since the storm. The goal for our week was to build 20 homes in 5 days in a section of town which was hit pretty badly by hurricane Katrina.
We began our week by gathering together for the opening ceremony where Jonathan Reckford, C.E.O. for Habitat for Humanity International, wished us a safe and productive work week. As we listened to future homeowners, Biloxi staff, and different AmeriCorps members, we were reminded of how much service is needed still in the gulf coast region and how such a small number of individuals can make such a large impact on so many lives. We were ready to begin building.
Monday morning arrived bright and early. We were excited to start work on our concrete slabs, which in only a few days would morph into a beautiful home. According to the weather channel, the temperature and humidity were supposed to be oppressive. And that it was! Constantly we were reminded to drink lots of water and take breaks as needed.
As the week progressed the houses turned into homes. Working alongside the partner families inspired everyone to keep working even though everyone was drained. By the end of the week, knowledge was gained and friendships were made.
We left Biloxi a little bit better than the way we found it; we built 20 homes for 20 families whose lives were shattered by hurricane Katrina. It was a great experience for all who contributed to the cause.
